What is DCAM V3?

The Data Management Capability Assessment Model (DCAM) is the globally recognised standard for data management best practices, developed and maintained by the EDM Association. It provides a structured, evidence-based approach to measuring how well an organisation manages its data, identifying gaps, and building a credible roadmap for improvement.

DCAM V3 is structured around 8 key components, 34 capabilities, and 101 sub-capabilities, covering the full spectrum of data management from strategy and governance through to data quality, architecture, and analytics. Because it is framework-agnostic, it applies equally to financial services firms, technology organisations, healthcare providers, and any enterprise with meaningful data obligations.

DCAM Assessment

A DCAM assessment produces an objective, scored view of your organisation's data management capability across all eight components, benchmarked against the EDM Association's cross-industry dataset of over 430 participating organisations. Cavendish conducts formal DCAM assessments as an EDMA Authorised Partner, with outputs that can be reviewed and certified by the EDM Association as conforming to best practice execution.

Cavendish brings to each assessment both the formal Authorised Partner credential and direct working knowledge of how data governance requirements translate into operational practice, including within the Isle of Man DAF regime. That combination means your findings are not only independent and benchmarked, but contextualised to your regulatory and commercial situation.

Why it matters

DCAM and the Isle of Man DAF regime

The Isle of Man DAF regime was designed in partnership with the EDM Association, and DCAM sits at the heart of the governance standards the regime references. A Data Asset Foundation must demonstrate that its data governance arrangements meet the required standards. DCAM provides the structured evidence base against which those standards can be assessed and evidenced.

For organisations approaching pre-qualification, a DCAM benchmark assessment gives a clear, objective picture of readiness. For those moving through the Statement of Applicability or preparing for AAP review, a full DCAM assessment provides the artefact evidence and structured gap analysis that the review process draws upon.

For internal data teams, DCAM V3 training builds the vocabulary, framework literacy, and structured thinking that makes every subsequent governance conversation more productive. A team that understands DCAM engages more effectively with the Foundation Council, the Technical Data Steward, and the AAP, and contributes meaningfully to the evidence gathering that registration demands.

Cavendish is uniquely placed to connect DCAM training and assessment with the specific requirements of the DAF regime, offering both services within the same engagement and drawing the relevant connections throughout.
